Something truly special happens when a child goes to overnight camp at Camp Thunderbird — they are empowered to break out of their shell, feel good about who they are and make memories they could never make anywhere else.
Children develop individuality and achieve personal growth as they gain new experiences. For over 40 years, Camp Thunderbird has provided a safe and welcoming environment that inspires kids to step out of their comfort zone and try something new. As campers make new discoveries together, they develop friendships, a feeling of accomplishment and a true sense of belonging.
Encouraging Participation: 40 Years of the Bandana Tradition
Since 1983, Camp Thunderbird's Bandana Tradition has encouraged campers to try new things, challenge themselves and cultivate their unique talents. As campers experience more, they earn a new rank, which is signified by their bandana's color. For many, coming back each summer to earn higher bandana recognition at closing ceremony is their favorite part of camp.
The Gold Bandana Wall in the dining hall is a visible monument to the intangible growth that happens when our campers take flight at Thunderbird.
Whether campers are trying something for the first time or honing a familiar craft, there is no shortage of adventure at Camp Thunderbird.
Adventures on Water
Campers cool off and make a splash in over two miles of Lake Wylie shoreline. Guided by staff trained in CPR, first aid and lifeguarding, kids gain confidence in the water as they master new aquatic skills. Paddle in a canoe or kayak, learn to sail, pick up speed water-skiing or bounce and climb on inflatable water toys.
From art to athletics, Camp Thunderbird has over 100 acres packed with new things to try. Kids get the chance to take aim at archery, bring unique creations to life at arts & crafts, push themselves on the challenge course, be expressive through dance and drama programs or compete in one of 11 sports. All activities are facilitated by CPR and first aid trained staff.
