NC Science Festival: Gold Panning in North Carolina

Reed Gold Mine is where the first documented gold find in the United States. From this discovery, the first gold rush gradually spread from NC to other southern states. Gold has been used for thousands of years for money, art, jewelry, and science.

Did you know gold is twice as heavy as lead? Or that you should always look for white quartz to find it underground? Gold is also pushed to the surface by volcanoes after spending thousands of years underground.

Come learn about John Reed and his mine, a nugget of gold history, and try to find your fortune by panning for gold!
