Lars the Little Polar Bear at Discovery Place Nature

  • When: Friday, January 11, 2019, 10:00 am
  • Location: 1658 Sterling Road Charlotte, NC 28209

What happens when a frisky little polar bear named Lars ventures out on the first day of spring?

Explore the changing Arctic landscape with a curious little polar bear in this full-dome movie adventure.

Lars the Little Polar Bear offers a charming story about the adventures of a curious little bear and his friends, and explores the habitats of their real-life counterparts in the Arctic.

Lars the Little Polar Bear is the beloved star of a children's book "Little Polar Bear and the Whales" authored by Hans de Beer. It's the perfect basis for a multimedia show to teach young children about nature, climate change — and a little astronomy.

The show combines illustrations from the book with a tour of the Arctic. Visit some of the animals who live there, through photographs taken by scientists on polar expeditions. Get to know the Arctic night sky, including the constellations Ursa Major and Ursa Minor, as well as Polaris, the North Star, and the star patterns of the Big and Little Dipper.

Throughout the show, young audiences will gain an appreciation of nature and learn that the polar bear's wonderful habitat is well worth preserving.

Housed in the Museum’s original Charlotte A. Kelly Planetarium (formerly the Nature Dome featuring Grandpa Tree), the dome has been retrofitted with a new Digitarium® Zeta planetarium system, with bench and floor seating around the dome.
