Autism Friendly Day at N.C. Transportation Museum

  • When: Sunday, May 19, 2019,  9:00 am - 12:00 pm
  • Location: N.C. Transportation Museum 1 Samuel Spencer Drive, Spencer, North Carolina 28159

May 19th, prior to opening to the general public, the museum will be open for an Autism Friendly event from 9am - noon.

Train rides will be offered at 10am and 11am. Visitors can also take a spin on the turntable and enjoy motor car rides provided by Red Springs & Northern Railroad. The museum's regular exhibits will be available, in addition to special activities related to the Historic Spencer Shops Train Show, including model railroad displays and more.

Trained museum educators and volunteers, along with volunteers from the UNC TEACCH Autism Program, will be available throughout the museum’s exhibit areas with specially designed interactive activities to create a meaningful experience at each exhibit.

Social Narratives will be provided to prepare visitors for any unexpected or unfamiliar experiences. Visual supports, such as schedules and activity systems will be available to help guide individuals through their preferred routes. Quiet/Calm down spaces will be available throughout the museum and highlighted on the provided venue map. Multi-sensory materials (e.g., fidgets, noise canceling headphones) will be available upon request from guest services.

We hope to provide a fun and engaging experience for individuals of all ages with Autism Spectrum Disorder, filled with opportunities to learn, interact, and enjoy the many exhibits that we have to offer.
