Voices From The Past at Elmwood Cemetery

  • When: Saturday, April 14, 2018,  1:00 pm -  5:00 pm
  • Location: Elmwood Cemetery 700 W 6th St, Charlotte, NC 28202.

Have you ever wanted to know more about the "dash" between the birthdate and deathdate engraved on a tombstone? On Saturday, April 14, 2018, the Mecklenburg Historical Association Docents will provide you with the opportunity to hear the stories of more than 30 men, women, and even a couple of children, as they come to "life" for the day. Portrayers will tell personal stories of our ancestors buried in Settlers, Elmwood/Pinewood cemeteries in Center City Charlotte. This family friendly event will entertain you with some of Mecklengurg's most interesting tales - such as the one being told in the photo above. Yes, those are circus characters telling the sad tale of John King, the elephant trainer, that was killed by his star elephant before it escaped from the circus and went on a rampage running up Tryon Street. From tales of our earliest forfathers that signed the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence in 1775 to recent prominent citizens, you will laugh (and even may be cry) but I guarantee you will say "Wow, I didn't know that" more than once!
