The annual celebration of Juneteenth on or around June 19th is one of the most important and storied historical occasions in the African American community across the nation. It marks the moment in 1865 that enslaved people received word of the abolishment of slavery at the close of the Civil War. Traditionally, the event is marked with public festivities honoring the accomplishments of leaders, a variety of performances, featuring organizations, businesses, and foods drawn from the local community.

As a complement to the Charlotte community’s traditional celebration of Juneteenth and in partnership with House of Africa, Levine Museum will host a free, educational family day for families, all with the goal of underscoring the history since the abolishment of slavery and the ongoing advancement of civil rights for African Americans.
