SCNP: Water, Mussels and You

  • When: Saturday, March 26, 2022,  1:00 pm -  3:00 pm
  • Location: Stevens Creek Nature Preserve and Center
  • Cost: Free

Did you know that a single adult mussel can filter 15 gallons of water a day?! These often-overlooked bivalves have a positive impact on the quality of your drinking water. During this interactive 'workshop', experts from U.S. Fish and Wildlife, Catawaba Riverkeeper and Mecklenburg County share tips for how you can protect water quality in your daily life, plus amazing before-and-after photos of the Stevens Creek stream restoration. At the creek's edge, we'll gauge the current water quality by dip netting for aquatic creatures, from insects to tadpoles to fish. If conditions are good, USFW will release live mussels into specially created habitats in the stream bed. This is a unique opportunity to connect with the water in the area you call home.
Pre-registration required 48 hours before start of program. Program takes place indoors and outside on gravel and natural surface trails; option to get your feet wet in the stream. Dress for the weather, including shoes that can get wet, and bring a change of shoes. Bring all necessary forms to get credit for continuing education.
