(1920) This is the first surviving film directed and produced by Oscar Micheaux, the first black American film director. The film is Micheaux's response to the 1915 propaganda, The Birth of a Nation by D.W. Griffith.

"Within Our Gates" is a silent film and stars an independent heroine, Evelyn Preer, fighting for what she believes in. Abandoned by her fiancé, an educated black woman with a shocking past dedicates herself to helping a near bankrupt school for impoverished black youth.
