In Charlotte, more than 60,000 children are growing up in “book deserts”, homes with few or no books. Research shows that in low-income neighborhoods, there is only 1 age-appropriate book for every 300 children. Without access to books, students struggle to keep up, and by third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school.
Books make reading and literacy possible, and Promising Pages makes books possible for more than 55,000 children in our region. We collect new and donated books and share them with under-resourced families, schools, and child-serving organizations in the Charlotte Area Book Desert.
By giving children the chance to choose, own, and love books, we’re building home libraries, closing the literacy gap, and opening doors to opportunity.
