Virtual Earth Day Extravaganza by Duke Lemur Center

  • When: Wednesday, April 22, 2020,  9:00 am -  5:30 pm

Join us on the Duke Lemur Center Facebook page on Wednesday, April 22 for an all-day virtual content extravaganza in honor of #EarthDay50! From 9:00 AM ‘til 5:00 PM EST, we’ll be posting lemur content every hour, on the hour, including never-before-seen video, talks from our lemur experts, livestreams of our lemurs, and virtual lemur trivia!

Here's a sneak preview of what to expect throughout the day:
11 AM EST - Grab a snack and join us for breakfast in one of our Natural Habitat Enclosures! We’ll share a video from the forest as a troop of free-ranging lemurs receives breakfast al fresco.
12 noon EST - There and Back Again: In search of Madagascar’s sifakas from peak to coast
Madagascar boasts some of the most breathtaking, iconic, and challenging landscapes on Earth, teeming with wildlife and possibility. Come hear about what it’s like to do lemur field work in the island’s rainforests and dry forests, as DLC researcher Dr. Lydia Greene shares her experiences searching for sifakas (and their feces) in her quest to understand the lemur gut microbiome.
2 PM EST - Mega Madagascar
Giant lemurs, birds, and hippos once roamed Madagascar and now their fossils are at the Duke Lemur Center! Meet the monsters with fossil curator Dr. Matt Borths and learn how the fossil record is used to understand and conserve modern species.
4 PM EST - Make Madagascar Green Again! DLC SAVA Project Coordinator Dr. James Herrera will be discussing our efforts in Madagascar applying reforestation and regenerative agriculture.
5 PM EST - Lemur Trivia! All are welcome to join in our first-ever virtual lemur trivia, hosted by Dr. Lydia Greene and Dr. Matt Borths. The winner(s) will receive a small prize, to be mailed out as soon as staff are safely able to do so, as well as eternal bragging rights as a bona fide lemur trivia champ!
