International Vulture Awareness Day

Celebrate all things vulture and learn why vultures are key to a healthy environment. These "nature's garbagemen" help clean up carcasses of dead animals and prevent the spread of disease. In places where their numbers are decreasing, like in India, this deficit is becoming a big problem for the human population that depends on them. Vultures are an ecologically vital group of birds that face a range of threats in many areas that they occur. Populations of many species are under pressure and some species are facing extinction.

Is International Vulture Awareness Day a real holiday?
Yes! International Vulture Awareness Day started in 2009 at the Birds of Prey Programme in South Africa and the Hawk Conservancy Trust in England. Now celebrated all over the world, the event highlights the important work being carried out by the world’s vulture conservationists. On the first Saturday in September, each participating organization carries out their own activities that highlight vultures.
What can I expect during the event?
Visitors will be able to participate in a variety of vulture related activities that are fun for all ages! Along the Raptor Trail there will be pop-up experiences occuring with our staff and resident vultures. Also, a Vulture Vickrey Auction will run all day with all of the proceeds going to vulture conservation efforts.
What is a Vickrey Auction?
A Vickrey Auction is a type of sealed-bid auction. Bidders submit written bids without knowing the bid of the other people in the auction. The highest bidder wins but the price paid is the second-highest bid. Our vulture themed auction will feature mostly vulture related items. All proceeds will go to vulture conservation efforts!
Is the Vickrey Auction the only way to support vulture conservation?
There are other ways to show your support for vulture conservation at the Raptor Center. The Eagles Landing Gift Shop features certain items that a portion of the proceeds go to vulture conservation efforts.
